| Set The Way Back Machine to 1995.... The IBM ThinkPad range had a well deserved reputation for bomb-proof build and clever I.D. The Thinkpads of the era were akin to the MacBook Pro's of the present, head and shoulders above the competition. I had the opportunity to use a few of these 701's and the way the keyboard would magically rise and fold out was a source of endless nerd joy. I found myself repeatedly opening and closing it trying to find a position where the mechanism would bind, catch or jam, but each time it folded and stowed itself perfectly- within a whisker of being caught by the edge of the lid. But the greatest thing about this Thinkpad and all of its contemporaries was was an unfailing dedication to producing great keyboards that were not an afterthought. I was reminded of the old 701 while typing on my Lenovo S10 Netbook. (Lenovo of course famously purchased the IBM PC/Laptop business and has faithfully carried on the tradition of building tough and innovative business laptops - albeit with an aesthetic firmly rooted in 1997 - frankly I doubt IBM would have done as well). The Lenovo S10 is a wonderful machine and within the inherent graphics limitations of it's Atom chipset it has done everything I could reasonably expect with aplomb. My only gripe with the S10 and all 10inch Netbooks is their XX% keyboards. The major querty keys are generally a non issue, the keys are reasonable sized and fall more or less at your fingertips. The devil however is in the details. The arrow keys, enter key, shift, ctrl, function, tab and the rest of the 'non querty' keys get shrunk and moved around. Which becomes a serious pain when you are trying to use keyboard shortcuts or keyboard intensive apps requiring a lot of alt-this and shift-that. So why don't modern Netbooks use the butterfly? It does make for a thicker design, but the extra 1/3 of an inch hardly makes a difference considering the bulky extended life batteries many people use. I hope someone resurrects the butterfly someday - because to quote Han Solo "Capacitive Touch Screens and Hokey-Touch Gestures Are No Match for a Decent Enter Key" |

How to Fix an Itunes Library Full of Duplicates and Mystery Tracks
Like many people, my digital music library began well before I had an iPod or iTunes, and has survived several iterations of sketchy HDD based iPods, corrupt iTunes libraries, failed computers & hard drives and everything in between. Recently I found myself with an iPod that wouldn't sync, 10K+ songs (many of them duplicates - and many simply labeled 'track 1', 'track 2' etc) and two branch libraries from my wife and daughter, both of which had a combination of songs, some duplicating songs in my library (and each others) and some not. This weekend I decided to fix all these problems and found a number of tools that really simplified things. Here are the solutions associated with each problem. 1. Partially labeled songs - Early songs of mine which I copied from CD's (before robust programs and before I knew any better) labeled "track 1" etc, some with album artist info, some not. For this issue, I found an app called Tune Up, which is like Shazam for iTunes (which is exactly what I put in Google search). Simply put, Tune Up, scans through your library and pretty seamlessly identifies each song, album, artist and artwork and updates your library accordingly. This cost $25 for a year's subscription and is worth twice that - it performed flawlessly - really, and my library includes a lot of weird sampler CD's from magazines and such...it even identified those perfectly. 2 & 3 Duplicates and Multiple Libraries. - I looked for a deduper for iTunes, and there were quite a few, but I found a much simpler solution. I downloaded WinMerge which is like a UX Diff utility for Windows. While the tool is intended for source code management, it works pissah for iTunes libraries. Basically you select two folders (the iTunes music directories you want to compare) and it spits out the differences (and not just the usual file name/date/size) but actual differences. Once WinMerge has finished it's work (which happens in seconds - even on a 10k file lib) you it's a simple right click to move the missing files over to your lib. WinMerge is free, but it's priceless - it really works that well. It might even beat out Notepad++ and MySQL for best freeware. It is a great answer to a simple and common problem. 4. iPod that won't sync - I had/have a first edition iPod classic 160gb that refused to sync about two years after I bought it. Among other symptoms, it during the sync, Windows XP would throw the error "Wrong Volume, please insert 'X' Volume" or simply an iTunes -50 error. The frustrating thing was that I managed to get it to sync successfully once despite the error, which led me to believe it was an iTunes/Windows/Corrupt File issue. Well, it wasn't, it actually half crapped out, a new iPod solved that problem easily. 5. Downloaded Songs Only on iPod - my daughter, buys itunes songs (on my account) but only downloads them directly to her iPod Touch over WiFi. Obviously I need to get these added to my Lib so we don't lose them if her iPod craps out. For this problem, the Copy Trans suite is the best solution, these guys do a great job and it is reasonably priced, I highly recommend all their programs. 6. Duplicate Songs In One Library- This problem arose out of previous attempts to fix the other issues, leaving me with a mess of actual duplicates (some disguised under the aforementioned "track_1", "track_2") and semi duplicates, songs that were duplicated on anthologies for example. For this issue there is actually an iTunes solution, if you hold down 'shift' while clicking on the iTunes 'file' menu, you will see an option to view only 'exact' duplicates. While it is still a manual delete, it is very easy once you don't have to wade through the not actually duplicates. Best (and only) semi hidden iTunes feature. Don't Bet Against Chrome OS

Well, Google has taken the wraps off it's much anticipated Chrome OS, and it didn't go over so well. In fact twitteratti and techtards everywhere were almost universally "meh" about it - oh and it's behind schedule too.....isn't that just super. In case you weren't paying attention to the star in the east and missed the demo, here's the gist of it. Chrome OS is essentially the Chrome browser, and isn't really what most people would consider an OS. Google Chrome will be sold on a netbook like hardware platform that boots instantly right to an enhanced Chrome browser. The tech press however, was looking for a Windows killer and a repeat of the Apple/MS wars. That would have been a good story, but a glorified browser isn't exactly a "stop the presses" event. I think however, that they are largely missing the point. The important thing about the Chrome OS is that it isn't an OS. I freely admit that the proposed platform has it's limitations, you won't be running Photoshop CS3 or Visual Studio on a Chrome machine any time soon. Most people will want (or need) to have a traditional PC simply because Browser based apps are still pretty rudimentary compared to locally hosted OS based offerings (OS apps have had a significant head start). Soon however, possibly even now, browser based apps and cloud services will be "good enough". I would argue that video entertainment (games, video editing, photo editing etc) is the most resource intensive task most people do with their home PC's. Do I really need a dual core PC with a super duper video card and tons memory to do word documents and other office stuff? Not IMHO. Is the average PC really suited for entertainment display? Not IMHO, the screen is too small and the speakers stink. Hooking the PC to a large HDTV is a great way to go, and alot of people have already done that, myself included. The trouble is, I already have two computers hooked up to the TV, namely the digital cable box/DVR and a game console. Both of those "computers" are a lot less of a hassle to deal with than the PC/OS combo. So, If I loose the PC with the OS, what am I giving up? Seems to me, the answer is "not a heck of a lot", except for word processing and photo editing, both of which are or will be "good enough" in the browser in short order. In my opinion, within the next 3-4 years, the only think keeping most people chained to a traditional OS/PC combination will be habit. Come to think of it, the instant on chrome browser/network device combo makes a compelling case for those "Nettops" that have popped up here and there, one of those would make the perfect kitchen computer. |

The Cray CX1 is basically a 24 core Intel Xeon CPU cluster running Windows HPC with 24 gig of RAM and 4 Terrabytes of disk, combined with a Windows 7 Blade Server and Nvidia Quadro FX GPU with 240 parallel cores and 4 gigs of memory. If that doesn't float your boat, you can skip the Xeons and go with and an all Nvidia Tesla GPU setup which spews out a whopping 4 terraflops....hold on to your butts indeed. All this in a dorm fridge sized box sold by Dell starting at around $8k for the chassis - each blade unit will run you another $8k. |

HP ENVY - New Premium Laptop and Shameless MacBook Pro Ripoff

Let's get this out of the way first and stipulate that the ENVY line's design is a total ripoff of the MacBook Pro design, shamelessly so actually. And why should they be ashamed? The MacBooks are by far the best looking, best constructed laptops on the planet and there is no shame in learning from your rivals. Isn't imitation the highest form of flattery? These new HPs actually out gun the Mac books in a few ways (and they ought to, they are a newer design after all), the 13 inch version ponces into the local Starbucks sporting what is purported to be the brightest screen on the market, a core 2 duo low voltage processor and a very slick, ultra thin extended battery pack that magnetically adheres to the bottom of the case, kinda like an ultra thin docking station. All said it's nice to see HP move their design into more restrained territory than their current, sometimes over-blinged, mass market consumer lineup. The new ENVYs also come with "premium" support, whatever that means. And herein lies the rub, I was a victim of the HP ZD7000 debacle and have not bought an HP product since. Like the new ENVY line the ZD looked great, but was poorly engineered where it counts, poorly documented and almost unsupported. So, as much as I like these new HP's I will wait and see. HP has been on somewhat of a roll since Carly F left (coincidence? I think not) but time will tell if they have really changed. |

Felo E-Pro Screwdriver Set Review

| After getting tired of the flimsy Chinese computer screwdriver set I had been using which was slowly stripping itself and every screw in site, I broke down and purchased one of these Felo E-Pro screwdriver sets. While not directly intended for computer work, the set contains a sensible assortment of bits which work well enough on a PC. I have to say, these are hands down the highest quality tools I have ever used and they are worth the small fortune they cost. The tool box alone is a revelation in this day and age of cheap junk. I also end up doing a lot of electrical work around the house, and being insulated, these are perfect for that as well. I can recommend these with no reservations whatsoever. Also, for those of you in the Boston area, I can also recommend You-Do-It Electronics in Needham, MA. Google Chrome OS -
Google just announced their intention to move into the OS space with a new operating system called Chrome OS that will be available in 2010. From what I can gather it seems as though it's primarily aimed at netbooks and similar low power computers. Google aims to make Chrome a lightweight, speedy and secure "Cloud Based" offering. I am just guessing, but I would imagine their goal is to get as close to an "instant on" as possible on a SSD equipped netbook. I am not sure what "Cloud Based" will mean, but I would guess that it might include either online extension of the HD and/or apps running on the Google apps platform and open sourced. My reasoning is that these are the current and future limitations of netbooks are processing power, storage and OS overhead, and if Chrome could mitigate those limitations they will have a real value proposition. Allowing developers to create and host apps on the Google Apps platform (a-la iphone apps store) would also drive some revenue for Google and Developers. HP Mini 5101 - New High End Netbook

| HP dropped the new Mini 5101 Netbook today, and I have to say it looks like a winner. HP is kindof an odd duck in the Netbook world and they have had a somewhat incoherent product suite. Their first Netbook had the form factor and design right (sporting an Apple like aluminum case and awesome keyboard & display), but it was saddled with a high price, Windows Vista and the less than stellar Via processor (rather than the de-riguer Intel Atom). HP then followed that up with a me too Netbook that offered nothing to diferentiate itself from say, the Lenovo S10 I am writing this on. Add to that a "Mini" with a 12" screen and stir. The Mini 5101 looks like the inexplicably good looking child of awkward parents. More... It has a 10 inch LCD available in the standard 1024 x 600 resolution, or you can opt for the high end 1366 x 768 sortof HD. Like the first Mini it features exemplary construction with a brushed aluminum lid and magnesium chassis and 95% full sized Macbook like chicklet keyboard. The new HP Mini has an Intel Atom processor and a unique set of Hard Disk options. The standard drives are high performance 7,200 rpm spinning disks, but optional are the first (to my knowledge) high capacity SSD (solid state disks) offered in a Netbook @ 80 or 128 gb. I could not find specs on the SSD's however and they vary dramatically in performance, given the high price of decent SSD's (The OCZ SSD I mentioned in an earlier post - which will outperform a 7200rpm drive) I suspect they are the low end, but the pricing details will reveal that. You can get the Mini 5150 with XP, Vista or some McLinux and it starts @ $450. This is a pretty serious computer though, and like HP's other Netbooks and many German cars, the "as ordered" price will probably be at least 1/3 to 1/2 higher than the loss leader. |

Google Voice - This is Gonna be Huge
In '07 Google acquired Grand Central, a VOIP telecom company and Grand Central services are about to be re-launched as GoogleVoice. Currently the service is only open to legacy Grand Central users, but Google has just acquired 1 million phone numbers from Level 3 in Boulder. Just from the basic information on the Google Voice home page, Voice seems to have an exceptionally rich and deep feature set, covering the gamut of VOIP features and best of all, it's free (at least for individuals). While it's clear that it is going to be a slam dunk for consumers, it's less clear but potentially more revolutionary for the Enterprise. More... With the addition of Voice, Google has a very wide and complete communication & collaboration product set, but where is it all leading? Currently, there is little integration between the various products on the Enterprise side. The possibilities are staggering, imagine if Waves and Voice were integrated, now you're cooking with gas, all of your project communications Voice, SMS, E-Mail, BBS, Documents and Instant messaging could be accessed from one place, and most importantly searched with Google's familiar search. Why not add the RSS feeds as well, Project Tweets, Calendar and etc. The possibilities are really intriguing, The trouble for Google in my opinion is how to maintain focus and avoid falling into the same trap as Microsoft, who's Massively integrated product suite is clunky, complex, bloated and just really tries to do too much, ending up doing none of it well. I have no idea where this will end up for Google, but it is terrifically exciting and I can't wait to see what happens. |

Lenovo s-10 Netbook Long Term Review

| I have had my Lenovo S10 for almost a year now, so I thought it would be a good idea to update folks on how it's been going. In short, it's been great, in fact, almost unbelievable given the low price. More...I have been using it as a backup, travel laptop and I use it pretty much every day. The light weight and compact dimensions are really the killer feature of Netbooks and in my experience it is well worth the trade off in performance and display/keyboard size. The only modification I have made to my S-10 was to max out the RAM (which was a snap to do BTW, one panel on the bottom of the computer gives you access to everything you need). Performance wise, it has performed perfectly well in run of the mill use like web surfing and apps and office productivity work. I have MS Office and Open Office draw and both suites work just fine, which I had not expected. The small size is perfect for plane use, where the small screen height is a decided advantage. Battery performance has been somewhat meh, and in actual use lasts 2-3 hours. Take this with the following caveat, I run the s-10 on the highest performance energy setting. The battery management software is o.k., but it seems to turn down the processor and display as power runs low (I am sure as designed). The trouble for me is that it keeps it there even after a recharge, it's a small PITA, and you may be able to fix it somewhere, but I can't be bothered with looking. If you are a Project Manager and have a lot of meetings, this is the gadget for you, take it to the meeting and make all the updates on the spot. By the time you are out of the meeting, the minutes are already in the team's in-boxs. |

IT Project Management - Lessons from the Kitchen

86 The PMBOK and Get Cooking - Three things the IT PM can learn from a Chef An IT project has a lot in common with a commercial Kitchen. Scott Berkin made this point in his book "Making Things Happen", and I could not agree more, in fact I have been saying the same thing for years. Why? A busy restaurant kitchen is an incredibly stressful and challenging environment, one that during the dinner rush is on the knife edge of the possible. Sound Familiar? Most of us have cooked for friends and family at Thanksgiving and have experienced the stress of cooking for a big group. The phrase "Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen" is undeniably true during these moments, and yet, you are only cooking one meal for 20 or so people. How does the relatively small restaurant kitchen crew pump out hundreds of individualized meals in just a few hours and what can that tell you about IT Project Management?
Meticulous Preparation: Nail the Basics This is the ante, without it you don't even get to play. For every meal service there is at least another 3 days of prep. Menu's & specials are planned, portions and recipes are set, staff is trained, food is ordered, baked goods and deserts are made overnight and finally food is prepped as close as being plate ready as possible. Nothing is left to chance. Why? because shit happens, that's why...... learn it, expect it, embrace it. Look at the picture again, the guy on the left is clearly dealing with some "shit" that just "happened". What's the rest of the staff doing? Their jobs ! That guy is called the "expediter" he is akin to the project manager. He is able to resolve the issue without derailing other activities because they have nailed the basics. Appropriate Risk Management: Nobody Likes Eeyore IT folks as a group are so risk averse that they spend an incredible amount of time worrying about and planning for every little thing that could possibly go wrong (no matter how unlikely). This is incredibly counter productive and inneficient, unless you are doing Military or Medical work, if that's the case, knock yourself out. Plug the obvious holes and move on. In a commercial kitchen as in a large IT project, there is an unimaginable number of things that could go wrong; orders are late or incomplete, waitstaff get flaky, cooks get cuts and burns, food goes bad, people get sick or no show and random things catch fire. If the kitchen were run by IT folks, there would be an ambulance and fire engine stationed outside and two of everything inside. There would also probably be meetings held before and after every plate is prepared, but that's another story. You and your IT project team and business partners need to understand that all kinds of things will go wrong and be mentally prepared, because if you have nailed the basics in planning and prep, and don't freak out, you'll recover. Ruthless Efficiency: If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean. In a well run kitchen, you are always working. Why? because management makes sure your working. The Chef doesn't send you an e-mail or wait for you to tell her that you're finished, she constantly walks around and makes sure you know what to do if you are idle. Let MBWA (Management by Walking Around) be your mantra. If a cook is not pulling their weight they are GONE - even in mid shift. It will kill your staff's morale and their respect for you if a team member doesn't pull their weight constantly. Be visible and keep people busy, don't be a jerk about it, but do it, quality, team cohesion and efficiency will all go up. |

OCZ Vertex SSD - This Makes it Official, HDD are SOO Over for Notebooks

The writing has been on the wall for some time now, but I think this is shark jumping time for the traditional hard disk drive, at least in Notebooks and Netbooks. Finally here is an affordable (~$300), reasonably sized (120GB) solid state disk with a dramatic performance improvement over HDD's. More...Given the cost per MB advantage that HDD's still enjoy, I am sure they will still be around in desktops, though I would not be surprised if we see more hybrid solutions where the O.S, swap space and other I/O bottleneck prone data are stored on the Solid State Disk, and less frequently used files are sent out to pasture on the HDD. It would also make sense to have an algorithm to intelligently manage moving files between the two as needs arise (Hello EMC). In a RAID configuration, these things would kill ! Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo RAID NAS Review

| After years of trying to get a cheap workable storage and backup solution for our importanthome files I finally broke down and bought one of these last week. Some years back I had abad experience with an early Netgear NAS so I was a little leery of home NAS solutions, buta disk failure and continued frustrations with XP network sharing had left me despondantand desperate for a solution. I had heard nothing but good things about Buffalo, and MicroCenter had these on sale, so I gave it a whirl. Oddly enough Mr. Grey Ponytail the MicroCenter worker almost talked me out of it by giving me incorrect info about the product. Ponytail insisted that this device needed client software installed on every PC that wouldaccess it and that it wouldn't just show up as a windows workgroup member. Turns outhe was only impersonating a geek and had no idea what he was talking about, it doesn't needclient SW and it does show up as any other network device would in windows. Anyway, the setup went relatively smoothly with only a minor glitch and a stupid one at that. More...Buffalo's utility installer software needs to "find" the machine on the network, if it can't, the installer doesn't finish - better design would be to finish installing the utility SW and then run a config program. Buffalo's documentation is pretty much crap as well and doesn't even include instructions on how to swap a drive in the even of a RAID drive failure. The product itself isas advertised and exceeded my expectations for performance even on RAID 1. I also found theconfiguration using the web control panel comprehensive and well done. Considering thatthe LinkStation is only a bit more expensive than a 2 Tb USB external drive, it kindof a bargain.I'll update this post if anything untoward occurs with the box in the future, but so far so good. |

Bruce Schneier's Solitaire - Secure Encrypted Communications Using a Deck of Cards
Solitaire gets its security from the inherent randomness in a shuffled deck of cards. By manipulating this deck, a communicant can create a string of "random" letters that he then combines with his message. Of course Solitaire can be simulated on a computer, but it is designed to be implemented by hand.
Solitaire may be low-tech, but its security is intended to be high-tech. I designed Solitaire to be secure even against the most well-funded military adversaries with the biggest computers and the smartest cryptanalysts. Of course, there is no guarantee that someone won't find a clever attack against Solitaire (watch this space for updates), but the algorithm is certainly better than any other pencil-and-paper cipher I've ever seen.
It's not fast, though. It can take an evening to encrypt or decrypt a reasonably long message. In David Kahn's book Kahn on Codes, he describes a real pencil-and-paper cipher used by a Soviet spy. Both the Soviet algorithm and Solitaire take about the same amount of time to encrypt a message: most of an evening"
